Chapter 425 - Former Commander's Skill
"Kyuu~"
"Ah, it really is a trident."
Last night, before returning from the port, I was shown the tool? Fishing gear? Weapon? that True said he used to use.
And indeed, it wasn't just a simple spear, but a proper trident.
[Broken Selkie Trident]
A trident for Selkies. Broken and impossible to repair.
The base of the three prongs was bent, and it certainly looked like it would snap if I tried to force it straight.
"Kyuu-kyuu~"
"Mmm-hmm…"
According to True, it was a weapon for fighting monsters that came from the open sea.
And because it was broken, they now only lived in the inland sea, where they could quickly escape.
It seems it can't be repaired, but can you make a new one?
"I'll just have to try."
The material seemed to be Light Silver Steel, which I could prepare.
The construction itself wasn't too complex, and unlike a spear, it didn't have a rubber part for launching.
"So, can I borrow this? I'd like to use it as reference to make a trident for you, True."
"Kyuu~!"
With True's approval, I guess I'll have it ready by the next time I visit?
But I had so many things to do…
………
……
…
"I'm home."
"Woof-n!"
I quickly returned to the mountain cabin via the Divine Tree.
The fairies were apparently going to tend to the Divine Tree and the Greenberries, so only Sweee came to the mountain cabin. Was she aiming for the Camlus Compote? Well, I had to send some to the White Dragon Princess, so I was making it anyway.
That aside,
"Leda, Roy, I'm sorry, but would you mind staying with Shal and the others for a while?"
""Bow!""
"Nyaa~" """Nyaa~""
The two readily agreed, and Shal and the Cait Sith bowed their heads.
I'm glad they're getting along, but I really should build a house for Shal and his group.
No, actually…
Shal-kun and the others' house?
"That, too, but Leda and Roy's bed is just hides spread in the storage…"
Ah, that's right.
Lupi also just had hides on the wooden floor, but I was starting to want to prepare something like a futon mattress for them. No, actually, for myself too.
"Speaking of futons, I need padding, don't I?"
Cotton… is that a plant?
"Yes. It comes from cotton plants…"
Cotton, essentially, could be cultivated, I thought.
And there was also apparently something called a cotton tree, but I'd only heard about it from Grandpa.
Is anything other than cotton okay? Um, like feathers or…
"Ah, feathers! No, we have Ecryu fur!"
Ah!
I must have appraised it and confirmed it, but I completely forgot.
Immediately… No, no, I had to make a trident for True and his Selkies.
"No, sorry. I'll properly prioritize and do things one by one."
Y-yes.
………
……
…
"Alright, it's done."
[High-quality Trident]
A trident that can be wielded with one or two hands. High quality. Attack Power +31.
[Spear]: One-handed, two-handed weapon.
Doesn't that look pretty good?
It's high quality!
"Yeah. Now, I just need True to try it out, and if it's fine, then mass production, I guess?"
If I'm going to mass produce, I'd want to break the level cap for [Blacksmithing skill].
I wonder if I should make the hammer I'm using now out of Mithril? Oh, tongs would be better.
What's wrong?
"No, I was thinking I want to break the level cap for [Blacksmithing skill] too."
I received more SP from [Cait Sith Guardian], so I had enough SP even if the [Crafting (Blacksmithing) skill] was rare. I thought it was uncommon, though.
That's a great idea!
"And I feel like I could do it if I made these 'tongs', but then, I should have done it before making the trident for True…"
Ah…
Well, there's no use worrying about it too much.
It wasn't guaranteed to break the level cap, and considering it might fail, making it beforehand wasn't a bad idea.
"That aside, I'm going to go mine Mithril first. I think it should be respawning again soon."
Yes!
Mithril was also needed for Magic Steel Ingots, so I had to mine it and turn it into ingots when I could.
………
……
…
[Blacksmithing skill level cap has been broken!]
[Crafting (Blacksmithing) skill can now be acquired!]
"Alright!"
Congratulations!
I made tongs out of Mithril, and successfully got [Blacksmithing +1], then took them to complete the level cap breakthrough.
The higher-tier skill was [Crafting (Blacksmithing) skill], which was Uncommon and required 4 SP, so I acquired it without hesitation.
"Now…"
Scythes for Pan and his Urisk, rapiers for Shal and his Cait Sith… Was it rapiers that were good for them?
"I think I'll try making a rapier for practice."
For Shal-kun?
"Yeah. I think a sword like the one Mion showed me at lunch would be good."
I hammered away with just plain iron, in case it failed.
Perhaps because I acquired [Crafting (Blacksmithing)], the process of getting what I wanted felt faster.
Thanks to [Heat Barrier] magic, I didn't suffer from the heat…
[Crafting (Blacksmithing) skill level has increased!]
I immediately appraised the finished product.
[High-quality Rapier]
A one-handed rapier. High quality. Attack Power +29.
[Sword]: One-handed weapon.
"It's pretty good, I guess? But there's no naming or anything."
Apparently, for blacksmithing, if you engrave a name on what you make, that's what happens.
"A name? Ah, you mean if I etch a name!"
For Woodcraft… I remember carving names on the ones displayed in the church.
Cooking… that's impossible in the first place, but there must be some other kind of judgment for it.
"Oh well. I'll save that for when I make something even better. Is it almost time?"
Yes. It's almost 10:30.
That meant Lupi and the others should be arriving soon.
"Woof!"
"Welcome back."
Lupi led the way, followed by Shal with Raz on his shoulder, then the Cait Sith, and finally Leda and Roy entered.
Since they were going to live on this island, they were exploring the southern side that they hadn't seen yet. Lupi and the others would probably be bored while I was blacksmithing.
By the way, Sweee and the fairies had gone to help Pan and the others with their farm work (and snacking) behind the church.
"Shal. How's this?"
"Nya!?"
When I handed him the newly made rapier, he received it deferentially with both hands, despite his surprise.
And then,
"Nya-nya."
Is he going to try using it?
He took some distance from the surroundings and then held the sword in front of his chest.
He looks pretty cool…
"Nya!"
"Oh!"
Light, nimble steps followed by a sharp thrust. Then a fluid slash.
Perhaps because of his flexible body, Shal performed a magnificent sword dance that truly looked like he was dancing.
Amazing!
Instinctively, the Cait Sith and I all applauded!
This means I need to make him an even better rapier.
