Chapter 59 - Learning History Through Games
Tuesday
“...”
Bell-buchou froze upon seeing the ‘Declare Nation Founding?’ prompt I had brought up.
This person freezes quite often; is she alright?
Buchou, are you alright?
“Uh, yes, I’m fine.”
Bell-buchou, having finished watching the video, sank deeply into her gaming chair.
“I saw the contents of the World Quest, and this is definitely related to it, isn’t it?”
“It must be. The area around the tower we’re going to for today’s live stream isn’t even part of the Kingdom’s territory.”
“Oh, so that means if we clear and settle the land, we might be able to declare a nation?”
It would be amazing if the ‘Witch Bell’s Manor’ founded a nation.
Both Mion and I thought it sounded interesting, but Bell-buchou wasn’t too enthusiastic and massaged her brow.
“That’s true, but... in this current situation, declaring a nation would only cause trouble, wouldn’t it?”
“I see...”
The tower is located southeast of the Kingdom, and southwest from the Empire’s perspective. It’s certainly a tricky spot.
“Do you two know what’s happening within the Kingdom right now?”
“Nat told me at lunch that NPC refugees are overflowing outside the cities.”
“Requests to build new towns for them have started appearing at the Adventurer Guild.”
Apparently, quests for beginner to intermediate players were posted, covering things like eradicating monsters in the entire region, ensuring safety, development, and transporting supplies for those purposes.
Are you all doing those quests too, Buchou?
“Yes, the Kingdom’s top players are split between our southeastern area and Leona-sama’s northwestern area. That’s how we found the Ancient Ruins, by going all the way to the deepest part.”
“Oh, really? Speaking of which, it’s a pretty tall tower, right? You couldn’t see it from afar?”
“Ah, that. Apparently, you can’t see the tower until you get close. They say it was concealed by ancient magic, but it might be a system-related thing.”
Ancient magic... wasn’t the door deep inside the cave also like that? Well, maybe it’s something only players can find.
Are you going to keep developing all the way to that tower?
“Yes. There was a pretty big river along the way, so I think a town will be established centered around that.”
“Won’t someone declare a nation there?”
“...There’s a possibility, yes. Well, I’ll tell the people around me to stop. Normally, if someone just creates a nation on their own, neighboring countries would attack before their military is ready. And if they lose and get titles like ‘Three-Day Ruler’ or ‘Kumquat Head,’ it wouldn’t be funny.”
I doubt there are dishonorable titles, but I wouldn’t want to be called that by other players either.
Um... if you’re developing the land through quests, wouldn’t that land belong to the quest giver?
“Ah...”
“...Now that you mention it, you’re right. I believe it was a count’s family in the Wolkelst Kingdom.”
Just as we were talking about this, Yata-sensei appeared.
“Everyone’s here, aren’t they~? Today’s the day Mion-san uploads a video~ are you ready~?”
“Ah, crap, that’s right.”
The video is ready, so please confirm it.
I reviewed the video Mion handed me. This time, it was about making and setting traps, and then going to check them.
It included the small fry goblins I fought during the live stream and the Saloon Lizard that was so effective with its paralyzing knife.
“Okay.”
“I haven’t seen this big lizard around the Kingdom. Does it live further south, environmentally speaking?”
“Alright, alright~ Let’s save questions for later~ I think it’s fine~ so shall we upload this~?”
Yes.
As Mion began the upload and Yata-sensei watched over her, Bell-buchou shot me a look that said, “Explain yourself.”
“The southeastern side of the island is temperate? Or subtropical? Something like that. The southwestern side feels like a normal temperate zone... I saw a Greydeer, a grey deer.”
“Greydeer are found in various forests around the Kingdom. There are hunting quests, but it’s apparently tough unless your Bow skill is reasonably high.”
“I see. A bow, huh...”
I have a bow I got from a Goblin Archer, but it was broken, wasn’t it? I meant to repair it but forgot. Actually, it feels like I have too many things I need to do accumulating...
Posting finished.
“Ah, yeah.”
When I checked to see if it would play properly, the view count was already in double digits. How fast are people checking it?
Should I go watch Buchou’s live stream today?
“Oh, you don’t have to worry about it. If we both watch each other’s live streams, we won’t have any time to play the game ourselves.
Besides, you might end up seeing spoilers, which Shou-kun hates, you know?”
“Ugh, sorry about that.”
I’d like to watch Bell-buchou’s live streams once my island life settles down a bit more, but between the bow incident earlier and everything else, I have too many tasks piled up; it’s bad.
“Before that, let’s study properly. If you get a failing grade in even one subject during midterms or finals, club activities will be banned until you finish supplementary classes.”
Yes.
“Yessir.”
“...”
...Bell-buchou?
“Bell-san is excellent in science subjects, but completely hopeless in humanities. Don’t you think it’s terrible, especially since I’m a Japanese language teacher?”
At those words, Bell-buchou turned away with a huff.
A Hime Cut traditional Japanese beauty—though with large breasts—would normally be the opposite, wouldn’t she? I imagine her being perfect in modern Japanese, classical Japanese, and classical Chinese.
That’s surprising.
“I understand struggling with English, but she seems like she’d be incredibly good at Japanese.”
“Mostly, ‘Answer the author’s feelings at this time’ is just...”
“That’s the classic ‘Extend the deadline!’”
At that, she made a displeased face.
Are you bad at social studies too?
“My Japanese history and world history are perfect. I studied them with all sorts of simulation games!”
That reminds me, before she started streaming IRO, she used to stream old simulation games...
I think she was screaming in the beginning when someone said, ‘Your head is best suited for hanging on a pillar.’
“Elective subjects are fine, but let’s study Japanese and English a bit more. If you have too many failing grades, it’ll affect your escalator path to Mitsumori University.”
“Yes...”
Ugh, really? I should be careful too...
Shou-kun, are you more of a science or humanities type?
Eh? Hmm, I haven’t decided yet. I’m just average in both...
I see. Let me know when you decide.
Ah, yeah.
All my INT bonus went to Miki, after all.
Yeah, well, I’ll think about it next year...
