Chapter 146 - The President’s Spending Habits (Part 1)
While the Kikyo Society’s expansion strategy is moving forward, there are some who are doing their own thing. Leading this list is the laid-back lady, the flower mage Orchid Lily. Lily owns a large piece of land on the outskirts of Exembra, where she runs a plant cultivation research facility. At my request, she’s currently experimenting with cultivating high-quality fruits. The results are so fresh, sweet, and delicious that I’ve been happily providing additional funding. Every time I visit this facility, I feel like I’m spending a considerable amount. Maintaining and running the facility requires a lot of manpower and, consequently, a lot of money.
However, even Lily can’t mass-produce high-quality agricultural products. The current goal is to increase production and continue expanding the flower fields. Still, the quality of these fruits is unparalleled. They are more than just food—they have a value that goes beyond mere sustenance. Such delicious fruits are probably one of a kind. It’s no wonder, given that she once worked for the Royal Family with her special abilities.
The various fruits here are, for now, priceless. This means that these miraculous fruits would be extremely effective as gifts.
Today, I came to visit this research facility with Valeria, under the pretense of being an investor. As a major sponsor, I naturally get to participate in the tasting sessions. These aren’t grand affairs; the only attendees are usually the older women who work in the orchard and the researchers.
"These fruits are just amazing. The aroma and taste are simply the best."
The fruit resembles a large grape, but you can eat the skin, which has no bitterness. In fact, the skin is sweet and has a good texture. The fresh and refreshing scent makes it even more delicious. The appearance is also stunning, with each fruit looking like a gem with its translucent, red skin and succulent flesh.
"Onee-sama, this is wonderful."
Valeria, taking a small bite, looks adorable. She still has her childlike moments.
"Yeah, this is amazing... I’d like to use some for gifts, so can we have a few packed up?"
"Of course. I can bring them to the headquarters later, if you’d like."
"Thanks. But let’s take it easy today and have some tea."
I don’t want to spoil such a pleasant opportunity with talk of work. We’ll enjoy the fruits and have a leisurely tea time.
After a high-quality vegetable lunch together, Lily heads to the Elegance Balloon, and Valeria goes off on a scouting mission. As the president of the Kikyo Society, I’m not tied to training and research all day. Besides occasional requests, I sometimes venture out as well.
This is mainly for networking. I regularly meet with acquaintances to listen to their stories and requests, and to convey my own. While I often delegate meetings with important figures to the Vice-Commander or the Secretariat Unit, I usually visit personal acquaintances myself.
I’m quite familiar with the surroundings of Lightning Street, my home turf. I can easily spot any unusual activity, like new rumors or unfamiliar faces. As I pass through the streets, I head to a familiar store on Sixth Avenue.
For these visits, I usually ride my motorcycle, the Bloomstar Galaxy. A sleek and powerful bike, it’s designed for stealth. While imposing bikes draw attention, its cool design prioritizes style over magical efficiency. But that’s fine; I don’t care what others think.
Ah, the wind on a leisurely ride is just delightful.
I stop by a store I frequent, one of my most visited places.
"Ah, Yukari-san! Did you bring what I asked for?"
Torietta-san from the Brillonvest clothing store is as energetic as ever. She always requests metal threads and other materials for her designs. When I generously provide them, she creates exceptional pieces, making her very reliable. She’s also a great help in making my personal attire.
"Yeah, I brought a bunch of stuff. Check it out later."
I’ve brought a variety of metals, gems, and other materials that might be useful for her. With Torietta-san, I don’t worry about costs or the value of materials. She’s trustworthy and understands my methods, so I don’t hold back.
"I always appreciate your help. By the way, I heard that the Kikyo Society is expanding its ranks again?"
"Yes, we need more people. We’ll be placing a large order for coats, so be prepared for that."
"Thank you. But the hard work will fall on my apprentices. I, the master, will enjoy a leisurely life."
I can imagine the hard work of her apprentices, but the master looks content and happy.
The Kikyo Society’s custom coats use the black magic mineral Carbonium and the pale blue magic mineral Blueglow Ore. These are ultra-rare magic minerals, even more durable and lightweight than Mithril, and virtually impossible to obtain without significant funds.
Few people can identify the materials just by looking at the coats, so wearing them isn’t a security risk.
Initially, I provided ultra-rare metal threads as a reward for making the coats, but now, to avoid inquiries about their source, I offer lower-tier materials. In exchange, I provide a substantial reward for each coat. I trust Torietta-san and her apprentices, so I don’t skimp on payment.
Considering the relationship between our organizations, it’s only fair to cover any inconveniences. While the coats are practically free for me due to my cheat magic, that’s a secret.
This store, being a fashion boutique, also produces a variety of accessories. With ample funds, they’re always researching and developing new products. It’s a fascinating place, and that’s part of its appeal, making it highly popular.
Additionally, the custom gloves I use in combat are made by Torietta-san and have been gradually improved over time. I owe her a lot.
The popular Brillonvest is expanding its workforce and facilities in the city of Exembra. I’m a major investor, covering a significant portion of the costs.
The mutually beneficial relationship between the Kikyo Society and Brillonvest ensures a good standing, even with occasional issues. We often bring in profitable deals together.
"New roll cakes are out at the pastry shop. Want to try some?"
"Sure, I was just about to take a break."
We enjoy our second tea time of the day, chatting about fashion, neighborhood gossip, and the recent news about our mutual acquaintance, Margaret.
As we leave the store, I notice a familiar coat and call out.
"Mary? It’s rare to see you here."
The stoic leader of the second Combat Unit usually spends her free time training or studying. Maybe she’s looking at some new clothes?
"Just wanted to change the size of a hidden pocket..."
She points to the inside of her black coat. Ah, not shopping for clothes, but for alterations. Probably to modify the pockets for her combat gear. She’s as dedicated as ever.
It would be nice if she found some other hobbies, but right now, this is what brings her joy. Even asking for small alterations seems to please her.
"Alright. I have other places to visit, so see you later."
I smile and bid her a quick farewell.
Next, I visit the workshop where I’ve invested the most money, the Dominic Cruel Workshop, which develops motorcycles. I walk in through the open shutter and call out to the owner.
"I’m here, Doc!"
"Ah, it’s you."
A large, barrel-shaped figure with giant goggles emerges from the back. That’s Doc.
I’ve already invested a considerable amount—hundreds of millions—and it’s likely to increase. It’s a bottomless pit, and it’s purely a hobby, so there’s no expectation of a return on investment. It’s just a hobby, and it’s enough that I enjoy it personally. Several members of the Kikyo Society understand and appreciate this hobby, which is all I need.
"How’s the Bloomstar Galaxy Mark II coming along?"
"To meet your requirements, we can’t use any existing parts. It’s going to be expensive and time-consuming. We haven’t even finished designing the frame, and there are areas I want to improve from the previous model. You’ll have to wait a bit."
The original Bloomstar Galaxy is a large bike that I still enjoy riding. However, it’s too big for everyday use, so I decided to create a mid-sized version, the Bloomstar Galaxy Mark II. I plan to use the original for long rides and the new one for city driving. I’m looking forward to the new design and color.
There are several half-finished and prototype bikes in the workshop, but they look different from what I requested, so they must be from other clients.
"You seem busy, but please prioritize my project. After all, I’m the big sponsor."
"Understood, understood. I’ve hired some new people, so those bikes you see are their projects."
Surprised, I ask, "Really? Can they understand my hobby?"
"Hmm, who knows?"
Doc works on unconventional magical vehicles, so it’s no surprise that unconventional young people are drawn to him. I don’t mind strange people as long as they do interesting things.
I sense someone entering the garage. One of the new hires, perhaps?
"Yukari? It’s been a while to see you here."
Turning around, I recognize a familiar face and large build.
"Angelina! It’s rare to see you here too."
"What do you mean by rare? What do you mean by rare?"
I ignore Doc’s grumbling and continue talking to the leader of my first Combat Unit.
"I’m here to check on some bike maintenance. What about you?"
"I came to discuss the Bloomstar Galaxy Mark II."
I can’t help but sound a bit proud. Angelina is a valuable fellow biker. I didn’t realize she came here so often.
"Mark II? You’re making another one?"
She seems interested in the purpose and design of the new bike.
"I’d like a slightly smaller one. Also, Doc, I have some of my young men who might be interested in working here."
Several of my young combatants are interested, which is a good sign.
We chat for a bit, and I discuss additional funding with Doc before leaving. Angelina stays to discuss further.
Well, there goes more money.
After leaving Sixth Avenue, I head to the heart of Exembra, where the city’s largest stores are located. Central Avenue is lined with high-end shops. A single alley can drastically change the atmosphere, making this area quite interesting. It’s also the boundary between the territories of the Five Great Families, so the security is surprisingly tight.
My destination is a meeting spot. Arriving at the ultra-luxurious restaurant managed by the Anastasia Union, I’m immediately escorted to a VIP room.
The seating alone costs tens of thousands of Gist, but that’s no issue for me. I might even order the most expensive wine. No, better not to get competitive.
As I enter the room, I’m greeted with a glare. I must have been a bit late, and my meeting partner seems displeased.
"You’re late."
"Sorry, sorry, little one. I had a few stops to make. I’ll make it up to you, okay?"
Anastasia Union’s Leader’s sister, as always, has a ladylike aura with a touch of sternness. Despite her displeasure, she seems happy with the promise of a future meeting. Her glare isn’t intimidating at all.
She coughs, slightly embarrassed, and pours the tea herself. As we catch up, we start with some casual conversation and information exchange.
"How have you been? It’s been a while, and you seem to be training as usual."
"Yes, ever since I lost to you, I’ve been training constantly. My brother also encouraged me, so I haven’t skipped a day."
Impressive. She seems stronger in both magic and physical strength since the last time we met. Her spear skills must have improved as well. For a lady, she has a strong spirit. She’s definitely a promising individual.
After some small talk, I bring up the main topic.
"So, when is the Leader returning?"
"I’m not sure yet. The current head family is unstable without my brother’s presence. He may not return to Exembra for a while."
The Leader, her brother, went to the northern kingdom of Berliza to quell a family dispute. From what I’ve heard, he’s not coming back anytime soon.
While his absence doesn’t affect me personally, as the president of the Kikyo Society, I prefer having him in Exembra. His absence disrupts the power balance among the Five Great Families. So far, there haven’t been any significant issues, but a prolonged absence could change the dynamics.
The Anastasia Union, being one of the Five Great Families with a core of beastfolk, doesn’t unnecessarily look down on women. This makes them a valuable ally for the Kikyo Society. Our relationship is good, partly due to my good rapport with the sister.
While we’re not formal allies, the Kikyo Society benefits from their neutrality. The sister seems a bit lonely without her brother, who she clearly misses.
"Understood. There’s not much we can do, though. How about you come and stay with me? I can train you with Siegrune and myself."
"Really?!"
Seeing her lonely, I felt the urge to encourage her. It seems she enjoys such events, as she doesn’t have many close friends.
Hehe, I’ll have to give her a grand welcome.
This chapter is a bit of a side story, but it continues the flow from the previous chapter without any time skips. Due to its length, I’ve split it into two parts. I’ll review and post the second part soon.
